Volocian Studios Legal Information

Software Licenses

Volocian Studios uses various proprietary and open source softwares released under a handful of licenses including (but not limited to) Apache, BSD, GNU GPL, and Creative Commons licenses. We prefer Free and Open Source (Free as in libre) software, though we do use other non-free open source, free to download, or proprietary commercial software in our products and services where it’s pragmatic to do so.

Source Code

Volocian Studios respects all software licensed to us and our users, and where required and available upstream, provide source code including modifications to anyone we’ve provided binaries to.

Multimedia Content

Multimedia content (video, graphic, audio, and text) produced by Volocian Studios complies strictly with copyright law in our jurisdiction (Canada). All content produced in house by Volocian Studios (including default software settings and configurations) is available under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial Share-Alike 3.0 license, though other licensing options including commercial licensing may be granted on request. Any content that isn’t produced in house by us directly is licensed properly from the content creators (with permission where required) or made use of under research, news reporting, or review exceptions for fair dealing as outlined in section 29 of the Copyright Act of Canada.

Courseware

We offer free and premium support for our users, including introductory and advanced courses in production and delivery of digital multimedia content. All courseware is produced in house by Volocian Studios, or properly licensed from its creator, though we may provide links to our students, clients, or users for material that is available to them under the above exemptions, but which we are prohibited from redistributing ourselves.

Non-Commercial Content

Our products and services do not include fees for non-commercial software or it’s installation. Wherever necessary, we provide our clients and users with direct links or easy download and installation scripts to install non-commercial content.

Trademark

Volocian, Volocian Studios, SYNC, SYNC Video, SYNC Tournament, SYNC Connect, SYNC Elite, SYNC 2020, syncUI, Volocian SYNC, the Volocian, Volocian Studios, and SYNC wordmarks and logos, are all Trademarks of Volocian Studios, and may not be reproduced or used in conjuction with content, products, or services by any party without the express consent of Volocian Studios.

Endorsement

The above trademark stuff is our quality control, but having said all of it, we love checking out new stuff and are usually more than happy to work with other artists or inventors if they want to base something on our stuff. Just ask!

Common Legal Questions

Can I include SYNC or Volocian software with my product?

As long as you don’t violate our trademarks, yes – if you’re not sure, ask :-)!

Can I sell my product with the SYNC logo on it?

No. Putting the logo on your product makes it appear that the product is something officially endorsed by Volocian Studios, which is a trademark violation. You proably can though as long as you ask :-)!

Can I use the SYNC logo to advertise my product?

No. Using the logo in your advertising makes it appear that the product is something officially endorsed by Volocian Studios, which is a trademark violation. You proably can though as long as you ask :-)!

Can I put SYNC in a public location?

Yes, but please note that you probably can’t charge for its use (depending where you are), may not be able to use the IRGL legally (we can only vouch for Canada). Having said all that, SYNC makes AMAZING digital signage if you leave it hooked up to your business TV, and we’re happy to discuss helping you fill that space with your own advertising or even helping you find partners that might want to see their ad running on the SYNC in your business when it’s not in play.

Can my non-profit use SYNC or an arcade cabinet running SYNC to help raise money?

Yes, but please note that you probably can’t charge for its use and end users will have to either load or provide the ROMs themselves.
